The preposed Lamu coal power station would be developed on 865 acres of a fragile mangrove ecosystem and would become East Africas tallest structure. Experts have stated that alternative energy sources would provide a cheaper cost per KW whilst also providing room for innovation in sustainable technologies. Burning coal not only contributes to man made climate change but also threatens nearby reef environments, water systems and the health of local communities. “The Lamu coal plant doesn’t make sense as Kenya has better energy options” to solve its energy crisis.
