With many of the Kuruwitu community entirely dependent on natural resources we are developing ways of keeping both the communities needs and the needs of conservation in balance.
Conservation solutions = community solutions
Within a vulnerable subsistence fishing community livelihoods need to be ensured at all stages. The KCWA community agreed to give up an area of inshore fishing to act as a breeding ground. This small step, although difficult to take initially, has paid dividends with improved catches across the whole reef. The increase in both fish mass and biodiversity has also attracted visitors to the area; another stream of income for the community.
